About Illinois State University

As the first public university in Illinois, Illinois State University has historically been a great place of learning. Beginning as a primarily teacher-focused university, so much so that it had a reputation as the best university for teachers in the nation, ISU began as Illinois State Normal University. It was not until after WWII that the term “normal” was removed from the official name due to shifts in educational offerings. With the name change, programs and degrees that were possible to achieve expanded, and now Illinois State University offers over 160 undergraduate degree options and many master's and doctorate options as well.

ISU was recently recognized as one of the Best Value Schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and our town, Bloomington-Normal, ranks as one of the top 5 college towns in America based on its quality of life. Within the past year, we’ve enrolled our most diverse freshman class in our school’s history, with 41% of this class coming from traditionally underrepresented groups. With our university’s broad history and continuous success, it is no surprise that ISU is currently adding more educational opportunities for its students by constructing an engineering program. At Illinois State University, we are proud to say that the opportunities for students and education continue to expand.
